It is essential to keep on upgrading WordPress to latest version. The latest version released with all bug fixes. Click here to get latest version of WordPress. As a WordPress blogger, it is important for you to know how to upgrade WordPress. It is too late to realize after your blog has been exploited. At that moment, do not blame on your hosting provider do not take care of your valued data. :-)


Before we get started, you need to ensure your WordPress host meets the minimum requirement. If you are not sure, please contact your hosting provider to obtains the detail. If you are using Linux hosting + cPanel, you can verify it via login to your cPanel, it will be shown at left panel.

1. PHP 4.2 or greater
2. MySQL 4.0 or greater
3. The mod_rewrite Apache module

Step 1: I am strongly recommended you to backup ALL your WordPress files and databases. Click here to download WordPress Database Backup plug-in. It helps you to easy backup the databases that you want with multiple backup options such as backup and store it in the server, download to local terminal and send it to you via email. Extract wp-db-backup.php, upload it into /wp-content/plugins/ and activate the plug-in.

Step 2: Deactivate all the plug-ins. The reason is some of the plug-ins may or may not work in latest version of WordPress.

Step 3: Delete old WordPress files but not the files/folder listed below. To make job easier, copy them and place under a backup folder.

  • wp-config.php file
  • wp-content folder
  • .htacess file
  • wp-include/languages folder
  • robots. txt file (for those the blog is the site)

Step 4: Upload the latest WordPress files without wp-content folder via FTP. Next, restore the files which store in backup folder.

Step 5: Run the WordPress upgrade program. Assuming your WordPress is install at www.myblog.com/blog/, then run it at www.myblog/blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php and follow the instruction presented on the screen. If your blog is your site, then run it at www.myblog.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php.

Step 6: Install updated plugins and theme. Lastly, re-activate your plugins.

Done! If you follow the step by step as above carefully, the WordPress should be successfully upgraded. If the result not as your expectation, don’t panic, click here to find out the common installation problems and the way to resolve it. In worst case, you still have a backup on hand.
